Conditions We Treat

Spondylolisthesis

There are many different causes of back pain. One common cause is spondylolisthesis—a condition in which one of your vertebrae slips out of place and ends up on the one below it. Typically, nonsurgical treatment is enough to relieve the symptoms of spondylolisthesis. If you have a severe cases of this condition, surgery is successful most of the time.

What is Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis is a spine instability condition in which a vertebra slips out of place and rests on the vertebra below. It may put pressure on a nerve, causing lower back pain or leg pain.

What Causes Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis can usually be seen in younger athletes and can be attributed to overextending the spine while lifting weights or participating in certain sports that involve repetitive bending motions. Genetics could also play a role as some people are born with thinner vertebral bone. In these cases, it is usually the result of wear and tear on the spine or disks. With age, the disks break down and this condition becomes more common.

  • Spasms in the hamstring (muscles in the back of your thigh).
